    In early September 2025, the 50th Plenary Meeting of ISO/TC59/SC8 (Sealants) of the International Organization for Standardization was held in Berlin, Germany. Expert representatives from more than twenty countries, including China, Germany, the United States, and Japan, attended the meeting. Zhang Guanqi, Technical Director of Baiyun Technology, was invited to attend as the Convener of Working Group 10 (Aesthetic issues) and delivered a keynote speech at the meeting, focusing on reporting the latest progress of the international standard ISO 19067, which is led by Baiyun Technology.     This standard aims to standardize the method for determining color changes in sealants used in building and civil engineering after laboratory-accelerated climate aging. It has now completed the processing of comments from the DIS (Draft International Standard) stage voting, preliminarily formed the FDIS draft, and was unanimously approved by the committee to enter the final pre-publication stage. It is expected to be officially released in January 2026.     International standardization and the globalization of standards are important directions for China's standardization efforts in the new era. Baiyun Technology is deeply engaged in the development and revision of international standards for the sealants industry. Not only does the company send experts to attend the annual ISO/TC59/SC8 plenary meetings, but it also successfully co-hosted the 43rd plenary meeting in Guangzhou in 2018, becoming the only sealant enterprise in China to co-host such an international conference. Over the years, the company's technical experts have continued to actively participate in multiple ISO sealant standard working groups (WGs), leading the development of several standards, including ISO 13638:2021. To date, the company has participated in the development and revision of more than ten ISO standards.     To enhance the influence of Chinese standards internationally, Baiyun Technology also took the lead in compiling the foreign language version of the industry standard "Silicone Sealants for Electrical Appliances" (English version of HG/T 5379-2018). This standard has passed review and is currently in the approval stage. Upon release, it will further promote the influence and recognition of China's silicone sealants for electrical appliances in the international market. Baiyun Technology demonstrates systematic and sustained characteristics in its standardization efforts. To date, the company has led or participated in the development and revision of 269 domestic and international standards, covering various subfields such as basic standards, test methods, and application specifications. In the previous article "Explaining Seepage Pollution on Curtain Walls", Bai Xiaoyun introduced the manifestations, causes, prevention, and solutions for seepage pollution on curtain walls. But seepage isn't the only kind of stain. There's another common issue called drip stains (or runoff pollution). Let's dive into what that's all about!   1. What Do Drip pollution Look Like? Imagine dust and dirt building up on the sealant joints, ledges, or sloped parts of a building. Then, when it rains, that dirty water washes down the face of the curtain wall panels, leaving streaks behind. Ever look up at a tall building after rain and see those ugly "tear tracks" or streaks on the walls? That's drip staining. Drip pollution occurs above and below sealant joints. It appears not only on stone curtain walls and aluminum panel curtain walls but can also be observed on other curtain walls like glass curtain walls. This phenomenon is especially noticeable on light-colored stone and aluminum panel curtain walls, significantly impacting the overall aesthetics of the facade. Causes of Drip Pollution   01 Dust and Dirt Accumulation on Silicone Sealant Surfaces: The silicone sealant used in the joints has a surface that naturally attracts dust and dirt. Because it's also somewhat water-repellent, rain doesn't wash it clean very well. So, dirt builds up right there in the joint. When heavy rain comes, it washes this dirty sludge down the wall, leaving those tell-tale streaks. Drip pollution from this cause is significantly affected by air quality. In cities with poor air quality, curtain walls require more frequent cleaning. After severe weather events like sandstorms or haze, many curtain walls need cleaning. However, cleaning is time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially on high-rise, super high-rise, uniquely shaped, or complexly designed curtain walls. Cleaning curtain wall panels can be difficult, costly, and involves safety hazards for high-altitude work.   After cleaning drip pollution, the curtain wall's clean appearance is only maintained for a certain period, requiring cleaning again after some time. If relatively severe weather occurs, curtain walls may need frequent cleaning.   02 Optimize Curtain Wall Design During design, efforts should be made to avoid rainwater washing directly from dust-collecting ledges or sloped surfaces onto the curtain wall. Today’s topic: How to Choose Sealant for Doors and Windows   As channels of connection between indoor and outdoor environments, doors and windows are also the bridges of sunshine, air, and energy exchange, realizing the society’s concept of energy saving and emission reduction in modern life. High-quality doors and windows are essential for a high-quality life.   During the production of manufacturing these essential bridges, sealants, auxiliary materials in petty proportion though they are, play a crucial role in forming their performance, especially in terms of water, air, warm, sound insulation. If the sealant is of poor quality, it may cause issues such as water and air leakage, which seriously affect the air and water tightness of the doors and windows. So, what kind of sealant should be used for high-quality doors and windows? Today’s Baiyun Online will explore this with you.   01 Choose Products with the appropriate Movement Capability   Currently, the main standards for door and window sealants in China include GB/T 14683–2017 “Silicone and Modified Silicone Sealants for Construction” and JC/T 881–2017 “Sealants for Concrete Building Joints”. Both standards refer to ISO 11600 for classification methods and requirements. According to GB/T 14683, sealants are classified based on movement capability into levels of ±50%, ±35%, ±25%, and ±20%. JC/T 881 further includes ±12.5% and ±7.5% levels. Since door and window joints generally experience only small movement, they do not require sealants with high movement capabilities. Therefore, most sealants on the market are rated at ±12.5% or ±20%. However, high-movement-capability sealants offer better performance of joint movement, so when it comes to applications with larger joint displacement, the use of sealants with high movement ability is recommended as the preferred choice.   02 Choose Excellent Weatherproofing Sealants Among various types of sealants, silicone-based sealants have the best weather resistance. However, the quality of silicone sealants on the market varies. Some manufacturers significantly reduce the content of silicone base polymer in order to cut costs and instead use large amounts of cheap mineral oils and powder fillers. These are commonly known as “oil-filled sealants,” which pose serious quality risks. Although such sealants may initially appear to function well, over time, the mineral oil migrates, leading to the sealant’s hardening, chalking, and cracking. If these oil-filled sealants are in contact with insulated glass units (IGUs), the mineral oil can penetrate into the IGU, leading to oil infiltration or “rainbow effects,” ultimately compromising the seal and functionality of the glass unit.   Mineral oils belong to the alkane class of plasticizers. The national standard GB/T 14683-2017, implemented in 2018, strictly limits the use of alkane plasticizers in silicone sealants. It explicitly states that GW-class products must not contain detectable alkane plasticizers. Therefore, it is recommended to choose GW-class compliant silicone sealants. To determine whether a sealant is oil-filled, refer to GB/T 31851-2015 “Detection Methods for Alkane Plasticizers in Silicone Structural Sealants”. This standard outlines methods such as thermogravimetric analysis, weight loss on heating, and infrared spectroscopy to quantitatively or qualitatively detect alkanes (mineral oils). While accurate, these methods require advanced lab equipment. Our company, Baiyun Technology, led the development of the group standard TFSI 088-2022 “Rapid Detection Method for Alkane Plasticizers in Silicone Sealants,” which offers a quick identification method when you are in offices, factories, and construction sites: Apply the sealant onto a 12-micron thick, smooth PE film and observe after 24 hours.   The principle is simple—mineral oil in the sealant migrates and penetrates the film, causing it to become uneven. The more oil present, the quicker and more obvious the deformation. Non-oil-filled silicone sealants will keep the film flat no matter how long they are left.

Silicone sealant is an indispensable sealing material in home renovation, used for gap filling, waterproof sealing, and more. Furthermore, acetic acid reacts with alkaline components in building materials (like ceramics and marble) and can corrode metal substrates, compromising renovation quality. Consequently, Acetic Silicone Sealants are unsuitable for whole-house finishing and sealing applications.
