Is your kettle really healthy?

The food safety of an electric kettle is closely related to its composition. An electric kettle is mainly composed of a kettle body, a spout, a lid, a heater and a handle. The body, spout, and lid are generally made of stretched aluminum, and the handle is made of heat-resistant plastic. The electric heater is a steel pipe or stainless steel pipe bent into a circle. The electric heater is installed at the bottom of the kettle and fastened with nuts. A heat-resistant rubber gasket is added between the electric heater and the kettle wall to make the kettle sealed and water-tight. At the same time, silicone sealant is generally used to bond the kettle body and the heating plate as well as the handle and the bottle body. Therefore, in order to ensure quality and food safety issues and prevent food contact materials from harming consumers' health, the adhesive materials used must pass corresponding test certifications and obtain qualified product test reports.
Currently, for silicone rubber products, the more common domestic and foreign food-grade standards and certifications are: GB 4806.11-2016, FDA certification and LFGB certification.

National standard
The food-grade testing standard for silicone materials in my country is GB 4806.11-2016 "National Food Safety Standard for Food Contact Rubber Materials and Products". The measurement items include: sensory test, heavy metal content (in pb), potassium permanganate consumption, total migration (using 4% acetic acid, 10% ethanol and 50% ethanol as simulated solution), etc.

FDA certification
FDA is the abbreviation of the United States Food and Drug Administration. It is the highest law enforcement agency in the United States specializing in food and drug administration. Food, food containers, medicines, etc. certified by the FDA are safe and effective for the human body. In the United States, substances used in food packaging materials are regarded as indirect additives and are included in the food additive safety regulatory system. The management regulations for silicone rubber products suitable for food contact are mainly the 21 CFR 177.2600 regulations in the US FDA, which regulate For silicone rubber products used in food contact, the formula and vulcanization conditions are clearly specified: it is required to measure the total extraction amount of silicone rubber in distilled water and n-hexane.

LFGB certification
The full name of LFGB is "Law for the Administration of Food, Tobacco Products, Cosmetics and Other Daily Necessities". It is the most important basic legal document in food hygiene management in Germany and is the guideline and core for the formulation of other special food hygiene laws and regulations. For silicone rubber, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment BfR has formulated food-grade standards for silicone rubber. Daily necessities that come into contact with food must pass testing. Only if they meet the relevant standards and requirements agreed in Articles 30 and 31 of the German Food and Daily Necessities Act can they obtain an LFGB test report issued by an authorized agency, proving that they do not contain "Products of Chemical Toxic Substances". The main test items for silicone rubber products include: total migration (deionized water, 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol), peroxide value test, heavy metal content (calculated as Cd, Pb), total organic volatile matter, polycyclic Aromatic hydrocarbon content, etc.
