Natural Aging Exposure Test of Silicone Structural Sealants

First, why examine aging resistance?
    Silicone structural sealant is an important structural adhesive material used in curtain wall structural adhesive assembly system (SSG). Second, the natural aging exposure test
Exposure tests are a means of examining the life and destruction history of a material under a particular climatic condition or actual use environment. The natural weather exposure test (also known as outdoor weathering test) is similar to the actual use environment. Exposure of the sample to natural weather conditions exposes it to the combined effects of sunlight, temperature, oxygen, and other climatic factors and determines its performance. Change to evaluate the durability of the sealant that is the actual life. For the problem of the durability of the sealant, a more reliable conclusion can be obtained, which is the basis for the study of the durability of the sealant, and therefore has been paid attention and adopted by people. The best method for the aging performance of the sealant is to identify it by natural aging; the data obtained from many artificial aging tests must also be compared and verified by atmospheric aging tests. Due to the ever-changing natural climate and aging performance of sealants, natural ageing tests are often conducted by selecting weathering sites in specific areas under typical natural climatic conditions.
Third, the natural aging exposure test
    The exposure field is the site where the exposure test is conducted. The exposure field shall be provided with a basic frame for the weather forecasting, instruments for meteorological measurements, and instruments. The natural climate environment is ever-changing, and it is also limited by geographical location. Therefore, it is very important to choose a natural climate exposure test field. The natural climate experiment is affected by the regional climate. Internationally, these climates are divided into five categories: Damp heat, dry heat, medium temperature, mild and cold. The exposure field should be selected to represent the harshest place of a climate type or approximate the actual use of environmental conditions.
Q-Lab's Florida and Arizona Exhalation Test Site is an internationally recognized benchmark for outdoor exposure testing. This is because the product is exposed to these areas and there will be a faster degradation process.
Q-Lab Florida is the world's largest outdoor aging test center. Q-Lab Florida is located in the south of Miami, the southern tip of Florida, and belongs to the subtropical region. The subtropical aging exposure in Florida is not only real but accelerated. The year-long sunshine in Florida can produce aging in other places for several years. The Florida test site has high sunlight irradiation intensity, strong ultraviolet radiation, high temperature throughout the year, abundant rainfall, and high humidity. It is this synergistic effect of UV, humidity, and high temperatures that makes Miami an ideal place to test the durability of materials in outdoor environments. This sunny, humid and warm extreme climate has proven to be particularly useful for the following types of tests, including:
• Color change, fade and gloss loss
• Cracking, spalling, chalking and foaming
• mechanical strength loss and physical degradation
• Humidity-sensitive products such as paints, building materials, and some plastics
• Biodegradable, including molds, molds, fungi, and algae
• Accelerated corrosion test
Q-Lab Arizona Test Center ranks among the world's largest desert exposure centers. The Q-Lab Arizona test site is located in the town of Buckley, 30 kilometers west of Phoenix, and is free of pollution from automobiles, industry and agriculture. The sun has high irradiation intensity and high temperature throughout the year. Compared with Florida, Arizona has more than 20% more sunlight than its exposure field, a higher average annual temperature and lower humidity. In summer, temperatures reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46°C). Black samples can reach temperatures above 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees C). It is this combination of strong UV light and extreme temperatures that makes Arizona an ideal place to successfully test high-durability materials. This extreme climate has proven particularly useful for the following types of tests and materials, including:
• Physical degradation of plastics and loss of mechanical strength
• Thermal expansion effect and thermal expansion coefficient do not match
• Study of maximum service temperature
• Color change, fading and loss of light
• Cracking, deformation and heat aging
Fourth, Baiyun silicone sealant natural aging exposure test

On the occasion of the release of the results of the 5th anniversary of natural aging in China, Baiyun Chemical will place 160 sets of silicone structural sealant samples at the Q-Lab test facility in Florida and Arizona respectively. A total of 16 sampling periods, the shortest sampling period is six months, the longest sampling period is 50 years. The sampling interval is short in the pre-aging period and the sampling interval is long in the aging period. Samples were launched in September 2017 and follow-up weathering tests were conducted in depth according to a predetermined test plan. The data obtained on the natural aging test of the atmospheric environment will provide strong data support for companies to continuously research and innovate and guide the application of products under different climatic and environmental conditions, so that Baiyin Chemical can provide customers with safer, more permanent and high quality.
